Radioshack: Account not found - Radioshack Protection Plan


I purchased a Radioshack Protection Plan two years ago for my phone. This past week I purchased a new phone and asked the representative in the store if I could transfer my Protection Plan over. Much to my surprise and frustration, the employee found no record of my account. After I left the store, twice I called in to Radioshack customer service with the same results. The representatives tried searching by various methods: variations of my name, past addresses, home phone number, etc. How could it be that they were charging my account $7.44 a month for two years but have no record of an account at all?

Finally, I asked if they could find the account by the bank account info. They told me they don't do the billing and gave me another number to call for the billing company. After a half hour on the phone with a rep from the billing company, we finally figured out the problem. All of the information on the account was incorrect. Name, phone number, billing address - all wrong for the last two years. Just to be clear, I don't mean they misspelled my name or got one digit of my address wrong. I mean there was completely different information with no connection to mine whatsoever. Essentially, there was no insurance on my phone but I was still paying for it.

The rep refused to compensate me in any way, shape or form for their error. I got passed up to a manager who was equally inflexible and incapable of saying anything but prepared stock statements about how apologetic she was. She claimed that the only piece of information they did have correct, the model of the phone, was enough to connect the account to me. I'm not sure if she thought I was the only person in the world who still owned that model (granted it's an old phone but not THAT old) or there was a page missing in her response binder.

In the end, it wasn't so much the money that will assure I never deal with Radioshack again but rather the complete and utter incompetence exhibited by their system and every representative I dealt with in it. I may not get my refund but maybe my story will save someone else the time and hassle of dealing with them.

The bottom line is, this is a company that cannot be trusted with your information, money or time - stay away.
